Art & Copy

WHYBIN\TBWA PRESENT: ART&COPY - WED 22 APRIL
An ad, ad-vertising a movie about ads?

April is always a dreary month. The scattering of public holidays and respective four-day weekends spread thin and fine; work becomes grinding as the end of financial year deadlines loom and your favourite barista's Seasonal Affective Disorder starts kicking in so your coffees aren't as hot as they used to be. Whatever it is that the pale motes of April contain, it isn’t everyone’s favourite time to be at work. But every now and then something changes all that.

Last night around 350 advertising enthusiasts gathered in The Cube at ACMI for the Whybin\TBWA & Youngbloods showing of ‘the’ industry must-see, Art&Copy. The turnout was impressive and fortunately, even clients came too.

A simple name for what Ron Silverstein would gladly attest to is a brutally simple piece of art, Art&Copy encapsulates all that is right, wrong and undeniably beautiful about the industry humbly referenced to in the film as 'Art serving Capitalism'. The film was magnificent in its art direction, not that its viewers would expect anything less, and the story set up in a way that kept us all dreaming of possibilities with our feet on the ground.

Rather than being a glorification of a self-admittedly indulgent industry, the film allowed us to venture into the world of creative possibilities while reminding us not only of the constraints of everyday industry life in this age but most importantly of the end user – the humble, hardworking family crowded around their TVs and computers. Don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t a movie about altruism in third world countries, but any egotism in ArtCopy was swiftly eclipsed by creative maverick and inspirational thoughts that left us with goosebumps and the sadly seldom feeling of “why didn’t we think of that.” What stood out above everything else were the film’s parallels, which tapped straight into the hearts and minds of why it is we love what we do so much, we'd schlep to Fed Square on a beautiful Melbourne evening and willingly give more hours of our time just to get another hit of this addictive stuff.

Youngbloods would like to say a thank you to Whybin\TBWA for making our wish their command; our valued sponsors Canadian Club and Whirlwind; and to everyone who came to support creativity and great ideas.

NEW YEAR REEBS Thursday 18th February

After an extremely cool invite including a map directing Youngbloods towards reebs (beers backwards) around 50 of our finest found themselves at The Deck of 508 Flinders Street, shadowed by the pillars of power and more comfortingly in the background, the new Freshwater Place offices of Leo's. Mingling and munching pizzas and pots, Youngbloods' unwieldy hairstyles and novelty tees contrasted against the pinstripes, tiepins and Blackberries of Melbourne's bean counters. Friends were found, sobriety was lost and as darkness fell over the city, glasses and mohawks were raised to mark the beginning of another exciting year for young professionals in the industry. This year, look out for more parties, more networking and more educational events than ever before.

Cheers (literally!) VIC Youngbloods

'NAUGHTY NOUGHTY' XXXMAS PARTY

December 17 marked the VIC Youngbloods first ever end of year gala and to say it was awesome would be an understatement. Held in the heritage Royal Melbourne Hotel, a refurbished Melbourne gaol, over 130 industry younguns partied like it wasn't Friday the next day.

We had gorgeous topless waiters (to help out the staff, of course), yummy platters of much needed after work nibbles and plenty of silly season booze flowing. But what really set us apart was our entertainment.

The stunning ladies from HiBall Burlesque performed four tantalising shows on the stage, our DJs got everyone moving and our guest of honour, Jeremy Hallam, showed everyone that dynamite comes in a small package. The sponsors, the promo goodies, the outfits, the ball put, the venue service, the guests...wow!

Of course we couldn't have done any of this without our sponsors - DDB, Clemenger, HardHat, McCann Erickson, SapientNitro, Gods & Monsters & Marmalade. Special mentions must go out to Marmalade for a brilliant video for our reel, Clemenger for organising Libra goodies and the Class of DDB Schoolkids, who are officially on detention until further notice.

So many mentions and thank you notes to write but first I think we all need some strong flat whites and a couple of Panadols. Well done team, and see you all in 2010.

- Mandie Kramer

TRANSPLANT 09 | JAMIE DRIVER & DION APPEL COFOUNDERS LIFELOUNGE

Transplant 09

A relaxed, balmy Wednesday evening set the scene for our third Transplant event at Honey in South Melbourne. We were lucky enough to have two of the coolest cats on the block, Jamie Driver and Dion Appel from Lifelounge, available for an hour inspiration - and the excitement was evident amongst all who attended.

The audience was a throng of eager creatives from all areas of the advertising and its surrounds, all united by admiration for the incredible work produced by Lifelounge; as well as account service who were equally enamoured by the guys' determined entrepreneurship and business acumen.

Dion and Jamie, using the most interesting PowerPoint I've seen in a while (where did they get those transitions from?!) introduced us to the A-Z of Lifelounge. From Jim Beam to Unicorns, Excrement to Polarcocks, we all left loving this ubercool hotshop a little more than we did before.

But beneath the glamour, models and jaw-dropping typography of third 'maestro' Luke Lucas lay something raw and a little more familiar - good ol' hard work. Dion and Jamies showed us that investing in your passion and working hard for what you believe in will eventually pay off.

Congrats to the members who won our awesome Lola&Bailey door prized and to the staff of Honey, who as usual, helped us run a stellar event.

THE 2009 SAATCHI & SAATCHI NEW DIRECTORS' SHOWCASE

More than 120 VIC Youngbloods were treated to an exclusive Melbourne screening of the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors' Showcase on Thursday October 22 at the George Cinemas in St Kilda. Featuring brilliant work from 23 of the world's hottest young directors, the showcase is on of the most popular events in the Cannes Lions Advertising Festival. Former 'Best New Director' finalist at Cannes, Barney Howells - of production house Gods and Monsters - opened with some words on the current TVC landscape "budgets have become smaller but you can still have bid ideas". The event proved a feast for the senses that Choc-Tops or Jaffas just couldn't match!

TRANSPLANT 09 | PETER BIGGS

August 13 saw VIC Youngbloods descend on Honey in South Melbourne for an exclusive session with Managing Director of Clemenger BBDO Melbourne Peter Biggs, the second in the 'Transplant' series for 2009. Over 100 members and guests saw Peter recount his journey from Catholicism to Clemenger, tell the story of Ernest Shakleton's conquest of the Antarctic and how he got his first break during a conversation at the urinal of an Italian restaurant. Along the way Peter drew from literary greats Mary Oliver and Max de Pree, "If you don't read poetry you shouldn't be in advertising". In all, the inspiration and verve of Anthony Robbins but without the air punches.

TRANSPLANT 09 | SEAN CUMMINS

June 17 saw VIC Youngbloods descend on Honey in South Melbourne for an exclusive Q & A session with industry luminary Sean Cummins of Cumminsnitro, the first in the 'Transplant' series for 2009. The room was abuzz with excitment as 80 young advertising professionals eagerly awaited Sean, who on arrival apologised to those in the audience who were expecting Ridge from The Bold and the Beautiful. He began using some talcum powder and a dark-haired member of the audience to show the only person who would be working in 'advertising' in 2034. Questions ranged from Tourism Queensland- Best Job in the world, the courting ritual for Richard Branson "you're not going to be in any of the advertising because to Australian's you're a hippy that crashes balloons", to "can I have a job?". Sean answered with his unique brand of passion, humour and verve that has seen the agency achieve great success recently in Cannes.

Direct from New York City, VIC Youngbloods presented an exclusive screening of DOWNTOWN 81.

Wednesday 25th March saw VIC Youngbloods stage the first event in 2009 with a trip back to the eighties. Sponsored by Sagatiba White Rum, Lifelounge, Whirlwind and fashion forecasters Drella New York, members and guests sipped and mingled to the beats of 80's DJ BDub in the lush lobby of the Como Cinema. After a healthy dose of Caipirinas, 136 attendees took their seats for an hour-long journey back to post-punk era Manhattan with a screening of 'DOWNTOWN 81' starring legendary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. A mix of urban fantasy, New York grit and only-eighties cool- the flick- its first showing in Australia, was followed by a rare chat with a character larger than the Big Apple itself: producer, fashion designer, and photographer Maripol. Film, finger food, frivolities and education... What more could you want?
